India Lose Yuvraj

Published on September 23, 2009

India batsman Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy after fracturing a finger.

The middle-order batsman sustained the injury while training in Johannesburg on Wednesday and will return home, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced.

“Yuvraj has fractured a finger in his right hand and has been ruled out for six weeks,” the BCCI said.

“The selectors have chosen Virat Kohli as his replacement. Yuvraj will fly out as soon as formalities are completed.”

Yuvraj was participating in a fielding drill at the University Ground when he pulled out due to the injury.

The left-handed batsman was attended to by physio Nitin Patel before leaving for a medical examination.

India are already severely depleted with opening batsman Virender Sehwag and fast bowler Zaheer Khan both missing the tournament due to shoulder injuries, and opening batsman Gautam Gambhir still recovering from a groin strain.

India’s first match is against Pakistan on Saturday. Live Sports Online will show it live online.
